Chapter News

A couple of weeks ago, our chapter participated in formal recruitment and gained three amazing women. Our recruitment theme was "Sweet Dreams with Delta Zeta" and the room was decorated with clouds and stars. Our sisters did amazing in the room and represented Delta Zeta values to a T. For philanthropy night, PNMs were able to create bags of baked goods that were later sold and the earnings were donated to Starkey Hearing. We are so happy for a successful recruitment and are excited to see what our new members bring to our chapter in the coming years!

A Small Chapter With a Big Impact (title can be changed, just a suggestion!)

Delta Zeta, Omicron Pi Chapter

As a small chapter, it’s easy to sometimes feel overlooked in our philanthropic efforts. While we work hard to fundraise and hold events like “Heart for Hearing” for the Starkey Hearing Foundation, we struggled with being directly involved with our main philanthropy, speech and hearing. Until, this past fall.

On November 16, 2018, we loaded two vans full of sisters and commuted to the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. We were all super excited to have this opportunity, and this was before we realized how big of an impact we were about to make on the lives of these children.

Once we arrived, we were able to hand them a check for $294.40 that we earned while volunteering and fundraising at a few West Virginia University football games. We then split our chapter into groups of two, one group with the elementary students, and the other group with the middle through high school students. Since it was around Thanksgiving, we assisted the students in making turkeys out of brown paper bags, feathers, and construction paper. We then proceeded to help them write what they were thankful for on the front. They absolutely loved it, and their faces lit up once their turkey was complete. We listened to their personal stories, their academic achievements, their involvement in sports, and so much more. We were embraced with hugs, laughter, smiles, and high fives. One of their helpers told us, “They love you girls. They don’t have visitors very often, so this made their entire week.”

The few hours we had with them flew by, and before we knew it, it was time to leave. We took a huge group photo with them before saying our goodbyes. Many of the students asked us to return soon and said they would miss us. I looked around with tears in my eyes, just to see my sisters with the exact same reaction. There was something about being in that room, hanging out with those students that reminded us exactly why we do what we do.

It reminded me why we are Delta Zeta.
