As members of Delta Zeta Alpha Theta it is important that we not only give back to our philanthropy, but that we give back to our community as well. One of our new chapter members made our chapter aware of a 12-year-old girl named Lyla. Lyla had been experiencing forms of bullying at her school and her self-confidence has been wearing thin. One of the few things that has been able to brighten Lyla’s day is the simple note she gets every day in her lunch box from her mom. The mom posted about the bullying issues on social media, and soon after the story was picked up by a local news station. Upon sharing Lyla’s story, the news station began writing her letters as well, and members of the station took time out of their day to spend a few minutes to meet sweet Lyla and bring a smile to her face.
Though there has been a lot of support for Lyla, she had begun to run out of lunch notes. As a chapter, we decided to encourage our new friend and write her some notes! We got all different kinds of fun patterned paper and markers and decided to host an event dedicated to writing Lyla notes. We hosted an ice cream social where members came and built ice cream sundaes while they wrote Lyla notes. We encouraged our girls to write notes with Lyla's two favorite things which are God and animals and stories of how our members went through tough times, but ultimately came out stronger! The event was a huge success! Our members loved giving back to the community especially to a young 12-year-old girl since we can all remember those times ourselves. We were glad to take 10 minutes of our day to brighten Lyla's whole day!
